The HDMI Forum has announced the release of the HDMI 2.2 Specification, a major leap forward in audiovisual technology that introduces a staggering 96Gbps bandwidth and next-generation HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology. This cutting-edge specification is designed to deliver unparalleled audio and video performance across a wide range of devices, from gaming consoles to home theater systems, setting a new standard for immersive entertainment.
The HDMI 2.2 Specification supports ultra-high resolutions and refresh rates, including 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz, catering to the growing demand for crystal-clear visuals in applications like gaming, virtual reality, and professional content creation. It also enables uncompressed full chroma formats, such as 8K at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and 4K at 240Hz with 4:4:4 at 10-bit and 12-bit color depths. These advancements ensure vibrant, lifelike colors and smooth motion, enhancing experiences for consumers and professionals alike.
The Ultra96 designation is a key highlight of the HDMI 2.2 release, allowing manufacturers to certify products supporting maximum bandwidths of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps. To achieve optimal performance, devices labeled with the Ultra96 feature name must be paired with the newly introduced Ultra96 HDMI Cable, capable of handling the full 96Gbps bandwidth and all HDMI 2.2 applications. The HDMI Forum emphasized that the existing Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable remains suitable for systems with up to 48Gbps bandwidth but falls short of the new specification’s demands.
As part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, all Ultra96 HDMI Cables must undergo rigorous testing and carry a Certification Label to guarantee compatibility and performance. This ensures consumers can confidently select cables that unlock the full potential of their HDMI 2.2 devices.
Another significant addition is the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), which enhances audio and video synchronization, particularly in complex multi-hop setups involving audio-video receivers or soundbars. This feature addresses longstanding challenges in maintaining seamless sync across devices, delivering a smoother and more immersive user experience.
The HDMI 2.2 Specification aligns with the industry’s push for higher-quality streaming and display technologies. For instance, IMAX has recently boosted its live streaming quality with “Stream it in IMAX Enhanced,” while Telestream has integrated intoPIX’s JPEG XS technology into its PRISM platform, reflecting a broader trend toward advanced audiovisual standards.
The HDMI Forum encourages manufacturers to adopt the Ultra96 branding to clearly communicate performance capabilities to consumers. With HDMI 2.2, the future of high-definition entertainment is here, promising unprecedented clarity, speed, and immersion for next-generation devices.
