HDMI 2.2 Arrives: More Bandwidth, Better Lip-Sync, But Don’t Rush to Upgrade Just Yet

The HDMI Forum kicked off CES 2025 with the announcement of the upcoming HDMI 2.2 standard, promising a significant leap in bandwidth, improved lip-sync technology, and a new generation of cables. But before you rush out to replace all your cords, there’s a catch: most consumers won’t need these upgrades anytime soon.

HDMI 2.2 doubles the bandwidth of its predecessor, HDMI 2.1, jumping from 48 gigabits per second to a whopping 96 Gbps. This massive pipeline is designed to support future technologies like virtual reality headsets, massive digital signage, and even light field displays. However, for the average consumer with a 4K or 8K TV, the existing HDMI 2.1 standard offers more than enough bandwidth for current and foreseeable content.

One feature that might catch the attention of home theater enthusiasts is the new Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). This technology aims to minimize lip-sync errors, those annoying moments when the audio and video fall out of sync, particularly noticeable in dialogue-heavy scenes. LIP promises smoother synchronization, especially in systems with multiple components like soundbars and AV receivers.

To accommodate the increased bandwidth, HDMI 2.2 introduces a new cable called Ultra96. The good news is that the connector remains the same, so your existing devices will still physically connect to HDMI 2.2 sources. However, to take full advantage of the increased bandwidth, an Ultra96 cable will be required.

The HDMI Forum emphasized that these new cables will undergo rigorous testing as part of their certification program, ensuring reliable performance. However, for most users, the current generation of HDMI cables will suffice for the foreseeable future.

HDMI 2.2 is expected to roll out in the first half of 2025, but widespread adoption will likely take time. Early adopters may see a limited selection of devices this year, with a wider range of products becoming available in 2026.

Importantly, HDMI 2.2 maintains backward compatibility with previous versions. This means your new devices with HDMI 2.2 will work seamlessly with older TVs and components, although some of the newest features may not be supported.

While HDMI 2.2 represents a significant advancement in connectivity, it’s important to remember that technology evolves rapidly. By the time the average consumer truly needs the capabilities of HDMI 2.2, newer standards may already be on the horizon. For now, most users can rest assured that their current HDMI setup is more than adequate for enjoying their favorite movies, TV shows, and games.
