A new Game of Thrones spinoff could be making its way back into HBO’s development slate and it might not just be Jon Snow returning this time around.
After previously shelving the idea, HBO is reportedly taking another look at a sequel series focused on Jon Snow, the brooding fan-favorite played by Kit Harington. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is in the early stages of reworking the project with a new creative team and a fresh direction. Writer Quoc Dang Tran (Drops of God) has reportedly joined the effort, and the story may expand beyond Jon’s life north of the Wall to explore new regions like Essos.
But the biggest development? Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) may now be part of the storyline, reuniting the two Stark cousins in a potential post-Thrones adventure.
From Isolation to Essos: A New Direction for Jon Snow
The original concept for the spinoff was pitched by Harington himself and centered on Jon’s emotional unraveling following the events of the series finale. That version of the show reportedly featured a dark tone, where Jon, wracked with guilt and trauma, lived alone in the frozen wilderness, burning cabins he built, abandoning his direwolf Ghost, and rejecting the idea of a heroic redemption arc. Harington was said to have pushed for the character to ultimately die, but HBO found the tone “too much of a bummer,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
In April 2024, Harington confirmed that the idea had been shelved after he and the network failed to find a version that truly resonated. Though he expressed a deep connection to the character, he emphasized the importance of not forcing a story that could diminish Jon’s legacy.
Now, with new creative input and possible new characters, including Arya, the project appears to have been reimagined with broader appeal. No cast has officially signed on, and it remains unclear whether Harington himself would return. In a recent interview, he seemed hesitant to revisit the role, even in voice work, saying, “I don’t want to go anywhere near it.”
For now, the project remains in early development, and HBO has not publicly commented on the status.
Meanwhile, the Game of Thrones universe continues to grow. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts January 18, and House of the Dragon is set to return later in 2026 with its third season.
Whether Jon’s story continues or not, it’s clear HBO isn’t finished exploring Westeros just yet.
