If you’re a Friends fan, you might want to hold on to your seat. Rumor has it a real, unscripted reunion special is underway courtesy of HBO Max.
However, any hopes of an actual reboot or scripted reunion were dashed by the show’s producers at the Tribeca TV Festival in September, saying it was off the table.
“We will not be doing a reunion show, we will not be doing a reboot,” said co-creator/executive producer Marta Kauffman. “The show was about that time in life when friends are your family,” she explained, adding that life changes when your family becomes your family.
“We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it,” added co-creator/executive producer David Crane.
However, during her recent appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, former Friends star Jennifer Aniston hinted that something was in the works in the way of a reunion for the original cast.
“I would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is,” Aniston said. “So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”
Although the show is now 25 years old, it’s still hugely popular even among viewers of a younger generation. Recently, Jennifer Aniston debuted her first post on Instagram with a selfie with all the Friends in tow. Her brand new account broke the Guinness World Records title for the fastest time to reach one million followers in just 5 hours and 16 minutes.
It sounds like though there won’t be an actual reunion revisiting Rachel, Ross, Monica and the rest of the gang. However, HBO is reportedly working on a cast reunion special of some kind featuring Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for its new platform HBO Max launching next year.
