In a significant shakeup for the television industry, HBO, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, has confirmed plans to shut down several of its linear channels, including HBO Family, ThrillerMax, MovieMax, and OuterMax. The announcement, verified by Spectrum on August 15, 2025, marks a strategic pivot for the premium network as it continues to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape.

In a warning to customers Spectrum stated that “At Spectrum, we are committed to providing you with exceptional service and want to alert
you of changes before they happen. Effective on or after August 15, 2025, HBO Family, ThrillerMax, MovieMax, & OuterMax will cease programming and will no longer be available.”

Other channels shutting down include Sino TV and Sino Prime on June 30th, 2025.

The decision to cease programming on these channels comes as HBO focuses on bolstering its streaming platform, Max, which has grown to over 117 million paid subscribers worldwide as of June 2025.

HBO Family, known for its kid-friendly programming such as Sesame Street and The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo, has been a staple for families since its launch. ThrillerMax, MovieMax, and OuterMax, part of the Cinemax multiplex introduced in the late 1990s and early 2000s, offered niche content ranging from action-packed thrillers to classic and recent films. These channels, while popular among specific audiences, have faced declining viewership as consumers increasingly turn to streaming services for personalized content.

For now, viewers can continue to enjoy the channels until August 15th and find most of the content on Max’s extensive catalog, which includes HBO originals, Warner Bros. films, and new additions like live sports and All Elite Wrestling programming. As HBO navigates this transition, the industry watches closely to see how this bold move will shape the future of premium entertainment.
