HBO Extends App Support for 2nd, 3rd Gen Apple TVs

Apple TVIt looks like HBO has decided to hit pause on its plans to drop app support for 2nd and 3rd Gen Apple TV models on April 30th. Engadget reports the networks is instead opting to extend availability of HBO Now until May 15th. And while a new end date for HBO Go support wasn’t announced, a spokesperson told the site it will be available for “a few additional months.”

Earlier this week, we reported on support documents on HBO’s site stating that app support for these older Apple TV models would cease at the end of April, with the network citing the need to “provide the best streaming experience.” According to the spokesperson, the decision to continue support for the time being was made in recognition of the current pandemic and the desire to give consumers more time to make updates to their streaming gear.

The move falls in line with HBO’s other recent efforts, which have made it easier, not harder, for consumers to stream the network’s content, including a free collection of curated shows and movies. And so owners of those older Apple TV models have more time to consider updating to a new model, or perhaps wait for a long-rumored next-gen release. In the mean time, HBO does offer a list of other devices that also support its apps.
