Google’s New Android TV App Makes It Easier To Find Free Channels To Watch

Google rolled out a new shortcut to find free TV channels without jumping between multiple apps.

The tech giant’s new Free TV Channels app can be found in your Favorite Apps row on your Android TV. The app gives you access to more than 115 free channels including local news, movies, TV shows, and sports, according to a Google support page.

Google started rolling out the new app in the U.S. on Monday, so you might not see it right away. I had to restart my TV and find the app through the Add Channels button.

The addition of the Free TV Channels app reflects the rise of free, ad-supported content as consumers get savvier about what to watch online. Google is trying to make it easier to find the different content across the growing number of free services that have popped up.

Americans are increasingly looking for ways to save money as inflation rates climb and subscription streamers hike their prices. Earlier this year, Horowitz Research released a report that said the average American uses 2.6 free streaming services, and one in four hours of streaming occurs through free ad-supported services.

The new app builds on the Live tab on Android TVs, which rolled out earlier this year. The tab houses over 800 free live channels through a partnership with Tubi, Plex, and Haystack News.
