The Google TV Streamer could be getting a premium remote with a backlight soon per a report by AFTVNews. Many Google TV devices currently do not have the hardware for a backlight, but AFTVNews discovered the potential for this bright new upgrade in the latest Google TV Streamer software update.
In the software update, AFTVNews found the following: “Backlight Mode,” “Illumination of the buttons on the remote control upon each press.” and other coding for backlight remote options that aren’t yet available in the Settings app.
From the AFTVNews report:
The code indicates that you’ll be able to set the backlight of your Google TV remote to one of three modes. A “Never” mode keeps the backlight off at all times. A “Standard” mode will illuminate the backlight for 5 seconds whenever a button is pressed. Lastly, a “Scheduled” mode will work like the “Standard” mode but only between 6 PM and 6 AM.
With a backlight, users will have better visibility in low-lighting conditions instead of guessing which button to press during those late-night binges. There are select devices that were manufactured with backlit support like the Google TV Onn 4K Pro. This update could suggest the launch of a new premium remote with this feature.
Of course, Google has yet to confirm any new hardware, but considering that the previous two Chromecast with Google TV models launched in 2020 and 2022, respectively, an upgrade wouldn’t be surprising. Given that it’s already being spotted in software updates, it could roll out in the near future, potentially alongside new hardware announcements.
Late last year, a survey of 1,000 cord cutters found that the Google TV Streamer was the second most popular player for those looking to buy. Featured streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Prime Video, ESPN+, Disney+, Max, Spotify, and others, with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision compatibility, have made it one of the most popular streaming devices. Plus, Google TV has upgraded the viewing experience by integrating The Roku Channel with Google TV Freeplay, so viewers can find more of their favorites for free.
