Google has announced significant changes to its smart home lineup, discontinuing production of the Nest Protect Smoke & CO Alarm and ending sales of the Nest x Yale Lock. The move reflects Google’s evolving strategy to refine its device portfolio and foster a broader ecosystem by partnering with industry leaders like First Alert and Yale, as detailed in a statement to the Google Nest Community.

The Nest Protect, launched in 2013, pioneered the smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarm market, earning praise for its innovative features like voice alerts and app integration. After over a decade of safeguarding homes worldwide, Google is halting its manufacture but ensuring continued support. “Nest Protect will receive security updates and work as always through their expiration dates,” the Google Home team assured users, noting that devices will remain available at the Google Store and other retailers until supplies run out.

In its place, Google is teaming up with First Alert, a Resideo-owned home safety leader, to introduce the First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Set to launch soon in the US and Canada, this new device will integrate seamlessly with existing Nest Protects, allowing a unified safety system controllable via the Google Home app. For instance, if a Nest Protect detects smoke in the hallway, both it and the First Alert alarm will announce the emergency’s location. The First Alert model retains fan-favorite features like remote silence, self-testing, and early warnings, ensuring continuity for Nest users.

Similarly, the Nest x Yale Lock, introduced in 2018 as a keyless smart lock, is being phased out. Google will sell remaining inventory and support existing locks with security updates, with passcode management transitioning to the Google Home app later this year. Replacing it is the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, developed in collaboration with Yale and slated for release this summer. Designed to complement Nest doorbells, this lock boasts Matter and Thread technology, extended battery life, multiple unlocking options (including a physical key), and a sleek aesthetic tied to Google’s smart home vision.

“Our vision at Google Home has always been to create a home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it,” the Google Home team wrote. “A truly helpful home requires a rich ecosystem we can’t build alone.” This shift emphasizes Google’s focus on enabling innovation through partnerships rather than solely producing its own hardware.

The announcement clarifies that Google Nest isn’t abandoning device development—last year’s Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) and Google TV Streamer prove otherwise, with more promised in the future. For now, Nest Protect users can opt for the First Alert alarm as a replacement, while Nest x Yale Lock owners can manage their devices in either the Nest or Google Home app, with broader smart lock compatibility (including Yale, Schlage, and Kwikset) available via Google Home.

Google expressed gratitude to its community, saying, “We appreciate you staying with us as we make these adjustments to build a smarter and more helpful home than ever before.” Support remains available for any questions as the company transitions to this new chapter in smart home innovation.
