Google Deploys Fix for Chromecast “Untrusted Device” Errors

Google has begun rolling out a solution to a widespread issue that plagued Chromecast users over the weekend, leaving many unable to cast due to “untrusted device” errors. The glitch, which primarily impacted Chromecast 2nd Generation and Chromecast Audio devices, sparked frustration across social media and forums, with users scrambling for answers. While Google has remained tight-lipped about the root cause, a fix is now in motion, though some complications linger for those who attempted a factory reset.

The problem emerged late last week, rendering affected devices unusable for casting and prompting a flurry of reports online. A Reddit user speculated that the issue stemmed from an expired certificate embedded in the hardware, a theory that aligns with the devices’ age—Chromecast 2nd Gen launched in 2015, and Chromecast Audio followed shortly after. Google has neither confirmed nor denied this, but in a support post updated today, the company acknowledged the disruption and outlined its response.

“We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days,” the post reads. The update, delivered over-the-air, requires devices to be connected to the internet to receive it. For most users, this promises a return to normalcy without further action—just a bit of patience as the rollout progresses.

However, the fix doesn’t fully resolve the situation for everyone. Google cautioned that users who performed a factory reset in an attempt to troubleshoot may still face hurdles. “You may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device,” the company noted, admitting that this secondary problem persists. Google assured affected users it is “working to resolve this as soon as possible” and directed them to monitor the support page for updates. In the meantime, a resourceful Reddit user has shared a workaround—unofficial steps that might bridge the gap until an official solution arrives.

The timing of the glitch is notable, as both Chromecast 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio are legacy products, discontinued years ago in favor of newer models like the Chromecast with Google TV. While Google has continued to support these older devices with occasional updates, this incident raises questions about their long-term viability, especially if certificate expirations or similar backend issues are to blame.

For now, Chromecast owners are urged to keep their devices powered on and online to catch the fix as it rolls out. Those stuck post-reset can only wait—or experiment with community-sourced fixes at their own risk. Google’s swift acknowledgment and action may quell the uproar, but the episode underscores the challenges of maintaining aging tech in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
