Funimation’s End is Finally Here, and its Merger With Anime Giant Crunchyroll Will Cost You

Funimation and Crunchyroll, two anime streaming services that merged in 2021, will finally combine under the latter’s name on April 2. But subscribers may not like the result.

Once the combination is complete, Funimation subscribers will be hit with a new $99.99 per year plan — a nearly double the current $54.95 rate.

The two services had already merged their libraries, with Funimation set to end its service in April. Funimation subscribers will need to merge their accounts with Crunchyroll before that deadline. Any content you purchased on Funimation won’t transfer to Crunchyroll.

Prior to April 2, viewers get a 14-day free trial, and then choose a new plan. They can stick with the $99.99/year rate or “downgrade” to Crunchyroll’s Fan Tier, which costs $7.99 a month. But that tier equates to $95.88 a year, which isn’t much cheaper than the new rate for Funimation users.

The Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan plans cost $9.99 and $14.99 respectively, and come with perks like offline downloads and access to games.

Crunchyroll, which reported more than 13 million paid subscribers in January, launched in 2006 and offers popular movies and shows like My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Blue Exorcist, Black Clover, Dragon Ball Z, and more. While the service got its start offering a free tier with ads, it removed that option in February, forcing all members to pay a fee to access its content.
