Thousands of Spanish-speaking households across the United States have been abruptly cut off from vital local news, weather updates, and entertainment programming following TelevisaUnivision’s decision to remove its channels from the Fubo streaming platform. The dispute stems from failed negotiations between the two companies over content licensing fees, leaving a significant void in Spanish-language programming for Fubo subscribers.

Fubo claims that TelevisaUnivision demanded a 25% price increase for its channels, a figure the streaming service deemed unacceptable. Furthermore, Fubo alleges that TelevisaUnivision employed unfair bundling practices, requiring Fubo to carry all of its channels, even those with limited viewership, as a condition for accessing the more popular content.

“TelevisaUnivision, the biggest provider of Spanish language content in the U.S., is attempting to use its dominant market power to force Fubo to pay higher prices, resulting in our Spanish-speaking subscribers paying significantly more to receive vital local news and weather, as well as sports and popular entertainment programming, in Spanish,” Fubo stated.

“TelevisaUnivision’s content is vital to Spanish-speaking audiences, providing trusted news, sports and entertainment programming that deeply resonates with our community. We have been working in good faith to reach an agreement with Fubo to avoid this outcome, but they refuse to pay the market value that other distributors have agreed to. Fortunately, our channels are broadly distributed across many platforms, ensuring our audience has plenty of options to continue enjoying our programming while we work towards a resolution.” TelevisaUnivision said in a statement to Cord Cutters News.

The dispute also extends to sports programming. Fubo argues that even with the proposed price increase, subscribers would still be required to pay separately for ViX+, TelevisaUnivision’s streaming service, to access all of their sports content. This, according to Fubo, constitutes a further abuse of their Hispanic customers who are passionate about sports.

This loss of TelevisaUnivision programming creates a significant hardship for Spanish-speaking communities who rely on these channels for crucial local information. Access to local news and weather reports is essential for staying informed about community events, emergency situations, and other vital information. The removal of these channels leaves a critical information gap for many viewers.

Fubo emphasizes its commitment to providing value to its customers and states that it could not accept TelevisaUnivision’s terms on behalf of its subscribers and investors. The streaming service maintains that it remains open to negotiating a new agreement, but only under terms that are “fair and equitable.” This includes ensuring access to Spanish-language content within its Latino plan at a competitive cost.

Despite the loss of TelevisaUnivision channels, Fubo highlights the continued availability of other Spanish-language programming on its platform. These channels include beIN Sports Español, Canela, Centroamerica TV, Cine Latino, Cine Sony Television, ESPN Deportes, Estrella, Estrella News, Euronews Espanol, FILMEX, FOX Deportes, Fubo Latino, Gol TV Spanish, Nat Geo Mundo, Noticias Telemundo Ahora, Nuestra Tele, Tastemade en Espanol, Telefe, Telemundo Acción, Todo Cine, Tr3s, TyC Sports, and WAPA.

The conflict between Fubo and TelevisaUnivision underscores the ongoing tension between streaming services and content providers. As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, negotiations over content licensing fees often become contentious, sometimes resulting in the loss of valuable programming for viewers. In this case, it is Spanish-speaking communities who are disproportionately affected by the breakdown in negotiations, losing access to essential local news and information. The situation highlights the importance of fair and reasonable agreements between streaming platforms and content providers to ensure that viewers have access to the programming they need and value.
