Now, the company has confirmed that the special, which will bring together the original cast of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer on stage for the first time in 16 years, has been delayed.
With production stalled for coronavirus, there was a plan to delay filming until early May, with enough time to have it ready ahead of the launch of HBO Max. Now that the pandemic is impacting the country for longer than originally expected, it won’t be possible for the special to be available on the service on launch day.
After being removed from Netflix at the beginning of this year, Friends will play a big part in drawing subscribers in for HBO Max when the streaming service launches this May. HBO Max paid $425 million to have exclusive streaming rights to the series.
The special was originally planned to help promote the reruns of the 90s sitcom and boost subscriptions to HBO Max.
