FreeCast, a free ad-supported streaming platform, will come to millions of government-subsidized phones and internet plans as part of a program to bring free video to low-income households.

FreeCast is working with the National Lifeline Association to get the service to customers on the Lifeline program, which offers qualifying individuals a great discounted smartphone and internet service. The NaLA was started to preserve the Lifeline program, and educate people about its benefits.

The program underscores how far-reaching free-streaming services have become as consumers in general have increasingly turned to them for their entertainment needs. In this case, they provide a free alternative to the traditional pay-TV bundle.

“Essential communications services include a wide array of services in today’s world,” said NaLA Chairman David Dorwart. “Breaking news, live events, educational programming, and entertainment are increasingly only accessible through streaming services, which require broadband. Lifeline and ACP consumers need a way to access these programs and this partnership with FreeCast will allow them to do just that.”

The program will begin with in-store promotions of FreeCast as retailers work through their current inventory of phones, as well as an outreach effort to existing customers to sign up. Newly manufactured phones for the program will come preloaded with Freecast.

FreeCast’s service includes hundreds of free channels and on-demand shows and films. You can also hook in your existing subscriptions for a one-stop experience, although it’s not required.

The program allows low-income households to get access to streaming videos, but it also potentially expands the reach of Freecast.

“This is a natural fit for us because our service gives consumers access to a massive wealth of content without spending a dime,” FreeCast CEO William Mobley said.
