Fox News solidified its position as the undisputed leader in cable news for the week of October 13, securing 98 of the top 100 most-watched weekly telecasts, according to Adweek. The network’s commanding performance underscores its enduring appeal amid a competitive landscape, drawing millions of viewers across both primetime and total day programming.

During primetime hours, Fox News averaged 2.333 million total viewers and 229,000 adults aged 25-54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers. These figures marked a modest uptick from the prior week, with total viewership rising 2 percent and the demo increasing 4 percent. In total day viewing, which encompasses round-the-clock programming, the network attracted 1.537 million total viewers and 145,000 in the key demo, reflecting a 4 percent gain in total viewers while holding steady in the demographic compared to the week beginning October 6.

Across all basic cable networks, Fox News maintained strong standings, ranking second in primetime total viewership and fourth in the demo. In total day metrics, it held the top spot for total viewers and third place in the demo, demonstrating consistent draw throughout the day.

MSNBC, while trailing significantly, showed mixed results. In primetime, the network averaged 822,000 total viewers and 63,000 in the 25-54 demo, posting a 1 percent increase in total viewers but a sharp 19 percent drop in the demo from the previous week. Total day numbers were similarly uneven, with 516,000 total viewers representing a 2 percent gain, offset by a 7 percent decline in the demo to 43,000 viewers. Among basic cable networks, MSNBC placed fifth in primetime total viewers but slipped four spots to 21st in the demo. It improved to third in total day total viewers and climbed two positions to 14th in the total day demo.

CNN experienced more pronounced volatility. Primetime viewership averaged 529,000 total viewers and 80,000 in the demo, buoyed by double-digit gains of 15 percent in total viewers and 21 percent in the demo over the prior week. Total day figures showed 390,000 total viewers and 58,000 demo viewers, with increases of 2 percent and 4 percent, respectively. Despite these weekly improvements, broader year-over-year comparisons painted a stark picture of decline across the board.

When measured against the same week in the previous year, Fox News saw primetime total viewers drop 6 percent and the demo fall 24 percent. Total day declines were less severe, with total viewers down 1 percent and the demo plunging 28 percent. MSNBC faced steeper erosion, losing 34 percent of primetime total viewers and 52 percent in the demo year-over-year, while total day figures fell 41 percent in total viewers and 54 percent in the demo. CNN’s downturn was equally dramatic, with primetime total viewers down 31 percent and the demo off 51 percent, alongside total day losses of 30 percent in total viewers and 46 percent in the demo.

The week’s data, derived from Nielsen’s combination of big data and panel measurements, highlights Fox News’ resilience in a fragmented media environment. Its near-sweep of the top telecasts reflects programming that continues to resonate with a broad audience, even as competitors grapple with shifting viewer habits and intensified scrutiny of news consumption patterns. While weekly fluctuations are commonplace in the ratings cycle, Fox News’ ability to outpace rivals by wide margins in both volume and consistency reinforces its status as cable news’ preeminent force for the period ending October 13.
