When Roku announced the Roku OS 7.6 update, it talked all about the new Roku TV features. While there are many cool Roku TV features, Roku quietly slipped in some features for Roku players.
The following are the hidden updates in the Roku 7.6 update that Roku didn’t list in its official notes.
Roku Microphone Used By Other Apps
In the past the Roku remote microphone was typically only used for Roku’s universal search. Now it seems Roku is opening it up to other apps to access.
If you go into the privacy settings, you will find an option to let other apps access the microphone. (Likely only found for Roku’s that have a microphone remote.) This new feature needs to be enabled by the Roku Channel creators, but it is possible that you may find Netflix allowing voice search or Alexa coming to the Roku inside the Amazon Channel.
Changes to the Roku Quick Buttons
In the past if you hit the quick button for Netflix on your Roku remote it would always just open Netflix even if you had a video streaming. Now if you have a video streaming your Roku will ask you to confirm that you want to exit out of the video and launch the new app.
This new feature will help Roku owners make sure they never accidentally exit out of their favorite shows.
New Restart Location
Roku has for some time now had a restart option for Roku in the settings. Roku has moved that inside the power settings menu. There you can reboot your Roku at any time.
