In a move aimed at bolstering competition in the wireless market, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today granted DISH’s parent company, EchoStar, an extension on its 5G network buildout. This decision allows EchoStar, the parent company of Boost Mobile, to continue its ambitious plan to build a nationwide 5G network despite financial hurdles.

EchoStar, which had faced challenges meeting its original buildout deadlines due to funding constraints, will now have a more flexible timeline to complete its network. This extension is seen as a significant victory for the company and for consumers, as it preserves a vital source of competition in the wireless industry.

Without this extension, Echostar likely would not have been able to finish the build of its 5G network, putting the future of the company in jeopardy.

Under the FCC’s new framework, EchoStar will be able to:

  • Expand its network further: By the end of 2024, Boost Mobile Network will cover 80% of the U.S. population, surpassing its initial 70% coverage target.
  • Offer a low-cost plan: EchoStar will introduce an affordable wireless plan and a 5G device to consumers nationwide, regardless of their location within the network’s coverage area.
  • Streamline its buildout: The revised timeline allows EchoStar to align its 5G network deployment with its 3.45 GHz spectrum licenses, leading to more efficient and cost-effective construction.
  • Lease spectrum licenses: Small wireless carriers and Tribal nations will have the opportunity to lease EchoStar’s spectrum licenses in areas where the company has not yet deployed its network.

This decision by the FCC highlights the importance of fostering competition in the wireless market. By providing EchoStar with the flexibility to continue its network buildout, the FCC is ensuring that consumers have more choices and that the benefits of 5G technology are accessible to a wider audience.

With the FCC’s support, EchoStar is now better positioned to realize its vision of a nationwide 5G network that delivers cutting-edge services and fosters innovation. This move will help to bring competition to the wireless market.
