FCC Cracks Down on Spam Calls with Strengthened Blocking Rules

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is taking aggressive action to combat the scourge of unwanted robocalls and spam calls that plague consumers. The Commission announced that it will vote on a Report and Order at its upcoming March Open Meeting that aims to bolster its call blocking rules, providing greater protection for consumers and holding phone providers more accountable.

The proposed changes focus on two key areas: expanding the mandatory blocking of calls based on “do-not-originate” lists and implementing a new notification system for blocked calls.

Currently, phone providers are required to block calls that appear on a “do-not-originate” list, which identifies numbers that are invalid or should not be used for outgoing calls. The FCC’s new rule would expand this requirement to include all providers in the call path, not just the originating provider. This means that if a call is flagged as suspicious at any point in its journey from caller to recipient, it can be blocked, creating a more robust defense against spam calls.

The second major change involves the introduction of an exclusive code to notify callers when their calls are blocked. This code, similar to the familiar “busy signal,” would inform callers that their call has been blocked due to suspicion of spam or illegal activity. This notification system aims to deter spam callers and provide greater transparency to consumers about why their calls may be blocked.

The FCC’s crackdown on spam calls comes as no surprise, as robocalls and spam calls have become a significant nuisance for consumers. These unwanted calls not only disrupt daily life but also pose a serious threat, as scammers often use them to steal personal information or perpetrate fraud.

By strengthening its call blocking rules, the FCC aims to create a more secure and reliable phone system for consumers. The proposed changes are expected to significantly reduce the volume of spam calls, providing much-needed relief for individuals and businesses alike.

The Commission’s vote on the Report and Order is scheduled for the March Open Meeting, after which the new rules will be implemented. This action by the FCC demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting consumers from the growing problem of spam calls and ensuring a safer and more trustworthy communication environment.
