2024 is over half over but there are some big things coming in the world of cord cutting in the fourth quarter. One of the biggest will be Disney+ adding a way to access ESPN inside Disney+. Disney is slowly turning Disney+ into a one-stop shop for all its streaming.
Last month it was announced that Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. will soon have access to select live sports and studio programming from ESPN, with the addition of a dedicated ESPN area on the streaming service starting in December. This move, initially announced by CEO Bob Iger in May and confirmed with a date in August, marks a significant step in Disney’s strategy to integrate ESPN content into its streaming platforms and prepare for the launch of a standalone ESPN streaming service in 2025.
The ESPN area will offer a curated selection of live games and studio shows, like the Hulu hub recently introduced on Disney+. However, the content available on the ESPN area will be limited. This integration aims to familiarize Disney+ and Hulu subscribers with sports content and encourage engagement with the Disney Bundle, which combines subscriptions to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Plus.
This development comes amid a wave of price increases across Disney’s streaming services, including Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Plus, and Hulu with Live TV, effective October 17. The price hikes also extend to the Disney Bundle offerings, with the monthly cost for the ad-supported bundle rising from $15 to $17, and the ad-free bundle increasing from $25 to $27.
Beyond the ESPN area on Disney+, Disney is actively preparing for the fall launch of Venu Sports, a collaborative streaming venture with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. Furthermore, a standalone ESPN streaming service is slated for release in fall 2025.
Disney’s multifaceted approach to sports streaming reflects its ambition to cater to a broader audience and capitalize on the growing demand for sports content. While maintaining its presence on linear television, ESPN is gradually pivoting toward digital platforms, offering subscribers various access points to its extensive sports programming.
The introduction of the ESPN area on Disney+ is a strategic move that paves the way for Disney’s ambitious expansion into the sports streaming market. As the company prepares for the launch of its standalone ESPN service and navigates the complexities of the evolving media landscape, this integration signals a significant shift in its content strategy and a commitment to providing a diverse range of programming to its subscribers.
