One of the dreams of cord cutting has been the idea that you could just pay for the channels you want in a la carte TV package. Now today at the Recode’s Code Media conference in Los Angeles, Disney’s Direct-To-Consumer Chairman Kevin Mayer said he is open to such an idea. According to Kevin Mayer Disney could “at some point” offer ESPN as an a la carte option.
Exactly how that would work is unknown and not likely to happen any time soon. Disney already has ESPN+ but they have worked very hard to make sure that ESPN+ is not a replacement for ESPN with a pay-TV service. Going a la carte would very likely upset many of their cable TV partners that are still extremely profitable.
For now, it seems that we are still a while off from offering ESPN and other channels direct to the consumers in an a la cate package, but it seems that the idea is at least out there at Disney.
