The Walt Disney Company is expanding its search for Bob Iger’s successor, casting a wider net that includes external candidates as it seeks to conclude a closely watched succession process.

Among the names that have surfaced in recent months is Andrew Wilson, CEO of video game giant Electronic Arts (EA), according to people familiar with the matter. Disney has engaged recruiters from Heidrick & Struggles to assist in the search, and the firm has reportedly identified at least two other potential external candidates, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

This development signals a shift in the search process, which initially appeared to be an internal race among a handful of Disney executives. Incoming Chairman James Gorman, former CEO of Morgan Stanley, is said to be driving the broader search, aiming to ensure a thorough and objective process.

Wilson’s History with Disney:

Wilson is no stranger to Disney. He previously interviewed for the top job at ESPN in 2018 and engaged in discussions with Disney about a potential acquisition of EA during Bob Chapek’s tenure as CEO. More recently, Disney and Wilson explored a partnership between EA and ESPN as part of Disney’s strategic review of the sports network.

Internal Contenders Still in the Running:

While the search has expanded, internal candidates remain in contention. Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, co-chairs of Disney’s entertainment division, Josh D’Amaro, head of theme parks and experiences, and ESPN chief Jimmy Pitaro are all seen as potential successors.

Iger’s Exploration of Co-CEOs:

Interestingly, Bob Iger has reportedly explored the idea of appointing co-CEOs to share the top job, even reaching out to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos to discuss the streaming giant’s experience with the model.

Gorman’s Vision for Succession:

Gorman, who takes over as chairman in January, has emphasized the importance of a formal and transparent succession process. He aims to find the right leader to guide Disney through a period of significant transformation in the media and entertainment industry.

Looking Ahead:

The search for Iger’s successor is still in its early stages, and it remains unclear who will ultimately take the helm. The decision will have a significant impact on the future of Disney and will be a defining part of Iger’s legacy.
