Disney Takes Direct Aim at Netflix After Once Being Allies

disney frozenBack in 2012, Disney and Netflix agreed to a new deal that would bring a ton of Disney movies and TV shows to Netflix. That deal didn’t start until early 2016. Now that deal is coming to an end.

Disney even reportedly back in 2016 considered buying Netflix according to the New Yorker and Recode. Instead of buying Netflix, Disney decided to build their own service that we now know as Disney+. Disney even purchased full control of Hulu this year, meaning Disney and Netflix are now direct competitors in the streaming space.

Now Disney is moving to use Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ to directly compete and likely try to take down the giant that is Netflix. Disney is doing this in a few different ways.

First, Disney has hired away some of the brains behind Netflix including Netflix’s Director of Original Film.

Second, Disney has created a bundle at the same price as Netflix with a ton more content. This week Disney announced that they would offer Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for just $12.99 a month. Not only that but Disney is including 4K content something Netflix charges $15.99 a month for. Clearly it seems that Disney is targeting Netflix with this new bundle.

Streaming services going after each other is not new, but this seems to be a very aggressive move to directly take on Netflix by Disney. The question now is will it be successful.
