Disney+ Reaches 5 Million App Downloads in UK, Europe

After launching on Tuesday, Disney+ has already reached a major milestone, hitting 5 million app downloads in under a week. The service launched in in the U.K., Ireland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on March 24.

While 5 million app downloads is an impressive number, we don’t yet know what the subscriber count will look like when official numbers come in. The app download number, which was estimated by a third party and reported by Variety, includes app downloads on multiple devices from the same account. The number does not include downloads on connected devices, or those who are watching exclusively through the Disney+ website.

Before the launch, Disney announced that it would be debuting Disney+ in Europe with lower video quality as its default. The company also announced that it would be delaying its launch in France, at the request of the French government.

According to App Annie, the third party delivering app download data, the time viewers are spending with Disney+ is on par with Netflix and Hulu. In December 2019, subscribers spent an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes on the Disney+ app, compared to 4 hours and 20 minutes on Netflix, and 3 hours and 20 minutes on Hulu.
