Disney+ might be getting some new features in the future, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger in today’s quarterly earnings call.
On the call, Iger shared the current state of Disney’s streaming services, along with future plans which include changes “from a product perspective, from a technology perspective”
The Hollywood Reporter first reported on comments from the call, including Iger’s mention of adding games or “a number of game-like features” as part of a partnership with Epic Games after Disney paid $1.5 billion for an equity stake in the company last year. Gaming features could look similar to Netflix’s Games tab, giving users a more interactive experience.
To make the service even more interactive, Iger also shared potential plans for bringing AI and user generated content (UGC) features to the platform. Variety quotes Iger as saying “there’s phenomenal opportunities to deploy AI across our direct-to-consumer platforms, both to provide tools that make the platforms more dynamic and more sticky with consumers, but also give consumers the opportunity to create on our platforms.”
Disney has recently gone up against several AI companies for using its copyrighted characters in AI-generated content. Bringing AI tools to users on its own platform would allow Disney to offer new features that could draw users in, while also maintaining full control of the company’s IP and content created with it.
