After months of frustration for home theater enthusiasts, Disney+ has fixed the 4K HDR playback issues that were affecting Apple TV 4K and Samsung Smart TVs. The app’s latest update (version 4.11.0) restores match frame rate and match dynamic range functionality, essential features for accurate Dolby Vision, HDR10, and SDR playback.
As reported by FlatpanelsHD, the problem had caused Disney+ to misfire on format switching across a range of content. The issue appears to have stemmed from backend changes related to the upcoming addition of HDR10+ support. With this fix, Apple TV 4K is once again one of the best platforms for Disney+ streaming, whether you’re watching Thunderbolts in 4K DV, X-Men in HDR10, or Only Murders in the Building in SDR.
Samsung Smart TV users also report restored 4K HDR10 playback after updating the app.
Disney+ at a Glance
Launched in late 2019, Disney+ has grown to over 153 million global subscribers, making it the third-largest streaming service behind Netflix and Prime Video. Operated by Disney Streaming (formerly BAMTech), the platform features content every month from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic, FX, and Hulu (in the U.S.), with international expansions via Star and Disney+ Hotstar.
Available in ad-supported and ad-free tiers, Disney+ supports up to four simultaneous streams and is accessible on nearly all major devices.
What Comes Next?
With 4K HDR finally back to working as expected, Disney+ can now move forward with HDR10+ rollout, a premium high dynamic range format that adjusts scene-by-scene brightness metadata. Support for HDR10+ would be a competitive step for viewers using TVs from Samsung and other brands that prioritize this format over Dolby Vision.
For now, if you’re using an Apple TV 4K or Samsung Smart TV, just make sure your Disney+ app is fully updated. You’ll finally get the playback quality you’ve been missing.
