The Sanderson sisters are coming back and audiences just can’t get enough of the witchy trio. Hocus Pocus first debuted in theaters in 1993 and established itself as a Halloween staple. The sequel premiered only on Disney+ 29 years later in September of 2022 and already a third film has been confirmed for the franchise.
While no official casting has been released yet, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker have already said they’re excited about the prospect of staring in another Hocus Pocus installment.
Sources quote Bette Midler saying, “I’ve always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once. I’d love to have a franchise – especially a character I love playing. I can’t imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship. It’s good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not many women cause that much mayhem.”
Some new characters from the sequel are rumored to come back from the third film. Even some original actors from the 1993 Hocus Pocus are tempted to return, although they weren’t able to work out schedules to be included in the sequel. Nothing is set in stone yet, but with the success of the sequel in the not-too-distant past, a film featuring a mixture of new and original cast members would cause quite a stir in the Hocus Pocus fandom.
The news was confirmed by Sean Bailey, the President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, who has led a number of live-action reimaginings of classic animated Disney films.
The sequel to Hocus Pocus was an instant hit with fans, entrancing over 26 million views in the first three days of its release alone. Hocus Pocus 2 broke the record for most viewed minutes for any streaming film ever, totaling 2.7 billion minutes.
