Disney+ has begun integrating pop-up advertisements within its app to promote the newly launched ESPN Unlimited streaming service. The decision, which marks a shift in the platform’s user experience, has sparked discussions among subscribers who have grown accustomed to an ad-free interface on Disney+’s premium tiers. The pop-ups appear randomly while navigating the app’s menus, prompting users to add ESPN Unlimited to their existing Disney+ subscriptions for access to live ESPN channels and an extensive sports content library.
The ESPN Unlimited service, which debuted in August 2025, offers subscribers access to a comprehensive suite of ESPN networks, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPNEWS, and ESPN Deportes, along with ESPN+, ESPN3, and additional content like NFL Network and WWE events starting in 2026. Priced at $29.99 per month as a standalone service, ESPN Unlimited is also available as part of a bundle with Disney+ and Hulu, with a promotional offer of $29.99 per month for the first year, effectively making Disney+ and Hulu free for that period. The bundle’s regular price is $35.99 per month with ads or $44.99 without ads for Disney+ and Hulu, though ESPN Unlimited includes ads regardless of the plan.
The pop-up ads appear as users browse the Disney+ app, often overlaying the homepage or content selection menus. They highlight the benefits of ESPN Unlimited, emphasizing access to over 47,000 live sports events annually, including NFL, NBA, college football, and UFC, alongside popular studio shows like SportsCenter and First Take. The ads encourage users to upgrade their subscriptions directly through the app, streamlining the process with a single click to link their MyDisney account to the new service. For those already subscribed to the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle, the pop-ups offer an upgrade path to ESPN Unlimited for expanded sports coverage.
This move has raised eyebrows among Disney+ users, particularly those on ad-free premium plans who expected an uninterrupted experience. The introduction of pop-ups, even for a service under the Disney umbrella, represents a departure from the platform’s traditionally seamless interface. While the ads are designed to be non-intrusive, appearing only intermittently, their presence has sparked mixed reactions. Some users appreciate the opportunity to explore the enhanced sports offerings, especially with the bundled discount, while others view the pop-ups as an unwelcome disruption.
Disney+ has positioned this strategy as a way to boost engagement and attract sports fans to its ecosystem, leveraging the popularity of ESPN Unlimited to drive subscriptions. The company is banking on the appeal of live sports to reduce churn and increase daily interaction with its streaming services. However, the long-term impact on user satisfaction remains uncertain as Disney+ balances its promotional efforts with maintaining a premium streaming experience.
