After Discovery completed its purchase of Warner Bros. from AT&T, it was announced that they planned to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single streaming service. Now reports have come out saying that Discovery plans to call that service MAX and launch it in the spring of 2023.
This comes from a CNBC report that said lawyers for Warner Bros. Discovery are vetting the name Max for the new combined streaming service. However, reports are that the final decision has not been made on calling the service Max or some other name.
Sadly we still do not know what the price of the service will be or what tiers we should expect for the new service. Discovery has been very careful about not talking about price so far. All we know is they plan to offer an ad-supported streaming option sometime in 2023 to attract more budget-conscious customers.
It has also been reported that the merger of the two streaming services is moving faster than first announced. Initially targeted for a summer 2023 launch, Discovery is now reportedly targeting a Spring 2023 launch.
“At the end of the day, putting all the content together was the only way we saw to make this a viable business,” JB Perrette, president and CEO of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, said this summer when the combination plans were first announced. “Bringing HBO Max and Discovery+ together is aimed at cutting churn so “there’s something for everyone in the household,” he said.
