Warner Bros. Discovery took a significant step forward in its streaming evolution today, announcing that Discovery+ in the U.S. and Canada will transition to a modernized, in-house technology stack. This migration aligns discovery+ with the same robust infrastructure powering Max globally, creating a unified technical foundation across the company’s streaming portfolio. The move promises to bring new features simular to ones already being used by Max.
Here are all the changes coming to Disney+:
- Refined Homepage and Navigation
- Enhanced Personalization Recommendations
- In-Player Discovery Improvements: In player discovery allows viewers to effortlessly switch between episodes and personalized content recommendations within the video player, streamlining the viewing experience and making it easier to enjoy the content they love.
- User sign-in via QR code
- Mobile Social Sharing: The content detail on the mobile app now includes a “Share” button for adult profile users to easily share show recommendations via text or social media.
Avi Saxena, Chief Technology Officer at Warner Bros. Discovery, hailed the upgrade as a game-changer. “This is a huge win, not only for our internal teams but also for our subscribers,” Saxena said. “We’ve been driving rapid innovation across our platforms, and now, all of our streaming products will benefit from a richer feature set. A singular unified platform has been central to our technology strategy, and this marks a major milestone in that journey.” The shift, he noted, reflects over a year of engineering efforts to streamline operations and enhance user experience across the company’s direct-to-consumer offerings.
The update brings Discovery+ subscribers a slew of modern features already familiar to Max users, alongside a more responsive app and improved video playback. Key highlights include a refined homepage and navigation system for easier browsing, enhanced personalization algorithms to better recommend content, and in-player discovery tools that let viewers switch between episodes or dive into tailored suggestions without leaving the video interface. Additionally, a new QR code sign-in option simplifies access, while a “Share” button on the mobile app’s content detail pages allows adult profile users to recommend shows via text or social media—perfect for spreading the word about favorites like 90 Day Fiancé or Fixer to Fabulous.
The revamped Discovery+ will continue to offer its signature mix of unscripted hits and originals from brands like HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, and Discovery Channel, plus CNN films and specials. Subscribers can explore new series such as Baylen Out Loud and The Baldwins, alongside classics like Tournament of Champions, Naked & Afraid, and Homestead Rescue. The platform’s library remains a treasure trove for fans of real-life storytelling, now backed by cutting-edge tech to match.
This migration underscores Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader strategy to unify its streaming ecosystem following the 2020 launch of Max, which merged Max and Discovery+ content into a single global powerhouse. By bringing Discovery+ onto the same stack, the company aims to boost performance, reduce churn, and pave the way for future innovations—ensuring subscribers in the U.S. and Canada get the most out of every click.
