DIRECTV NOW Adds 5.1 Audio to Some Channels

Cord cutters have been asking for 5.1 audio on a live TV streaming service. DIRECTV NOW is the first live TV streaming service to answer this request.

According to some readers who are beta testers for the new DIRECTV NOW app, 5.1 audio is now offered on some channels. As best we can tell several channels, including MTV, have been updated to offer 5.1 audio; however, not all shows on these channels have 5.1 audio.

This is a big step for AT&T’s live TV streaming service because it gives DIRECTV NOW a feature that no other live TV streaming service currently offers. In a world of increasing competition, anything that can help you stand out is good news for DIRECTV NOW.

AT&T has not announced the new 5.1 audio, and it was not part of the list of new features coming to DIRECTV NOW announced last summer. So far we are still waiting for the 4K and the new DVR/app to go live for all subscribers.

Officially the new app is expected sometime this year, but increasingly it is looking like the new app may come out in 2018.
