Today, DIRECTV announced that it will offer new TV packages that make local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC channels optional, along with new TV packages for its satellite customers. These new packages will be $12 cheaper a month, saving customers $140 a year. A great option for anyone who can get the channels with an antenna for free.

“Consumers have been voting with their wallets for years that pay TV – as currently constructed – is too expensive and restricts their choices,” said Rob Thun, DIRECTV chief content officer said in a statement sent to Cord Cutters News. “Our new ‘No Locals’ package enables customers to take an important step forward in culling out certain types of content they may no longer care to watch and better balance the price they are willing to pay.”

Sadly, for streaming customers, these new plans are only for satellite customers at this time. This comes after DIRECTV had several large fights with local TV station owners last year. At the time, DIRECTV talked bout wanting to do something like this. Now it has become a reality in 2024.

Current DIRECTV satellite customers should call customer service (1-800-531-5000) if they care to switch their local package configuration. Prospective or new satellite customers can sign up for a DIRECTV account online and indicate whether they want local stations there.
