In a significant expansion of its local content, DIRECTV has launched Allentown-based WFMZ-TV for all its Philadelphia-area streaming customers. This new addition means DIRECTV STREAM and satellite-free customers will now have access to WFMZ’s local news, weather, and entertainment programming.
Owned by locally based Maranatha Broadcasting Co., WFMZ-TV has consistently maintained a strong presence among local news viewers, despite competing with major network-owned stations from ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and Nexstar. Known for its award-winning journalism and extensive community-focused content, WFMZ has long been a trusted source for residents in the Lehigh Valley, Berks County, and the greater Philadelphia area.
The expansion’s timing is particularly notable, with the 2024 Presidential Election pending. Pennsylvania has become a hotbed for political activity in the lead-up to the vote. With the state’s 19 critical electoral votes at stake, visits from presidential candidates and their political surrogates have become frequent in the region.
Barry Fisher, President of WFMZ-TV, highlighted the station’s role in this political landscape in the news release, stating: “This addition is especially important when Pennsylvania – a key swing state in the upcoming Nov. 5 election – is at the forefront of national politics.”
With WFMZ-TV’s expanded reach through DIRECTV, Philadelphia-area viewers can now stay more connected to the local news that matters to them, along with ongoing election coverage. The station’s programming also includes popular syndicated shows, community events, and unique local content such as the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, The Freddy Awards High School Musical program, and local sports coverage like AAA Baseball and Hockey.
Dallia Kim, Vice President of Content and Programming at DIRECTV, emphasized the value this addition brings to subscribers: “We are very pleased to provide WFMZ-TV to our DIRECTV streaming subscribers and expect this station to have the same great level of engagement for our streaming subscribers as it has always proven with our satellite homes.”
For residents of the Lehigh Valley and the greater Philadelphia area, this partnership with DIRECTV offers more flexibility, allowing them to stay informed through the DIRECTV app on mobile devices or at home. With Pennsylvania’s importance on the national political stage and WFMZ’s unmatched local coverage, the station’s expanded availability is expected to play a crucial role in keeping the region’s voters well-informed.
