Deadpool 3 is the film audiences most look forward to seeing on the big screen next year, according to Fandango’s 2024 Most Anticipated Movies Survey.
2024 is shaping up to be a year where big franchises get updates, including Beetlejuice 2, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Dune: Part Two, Venom 3, Despicable Me 4, and Inside Out 2. Fandango, one of the leading online movie ticket-buying services, conducts a survey every year to determine the movie audiences can’t wait to see. Last year was also filled with sequels and prequels with Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 topping the list.
This year’s survey showed 88% of ticket-buyers plan to see several movies in theaters next year, and 81% said they were more excited to head to the theater in 2024 compared to 2023, a year that saw Barbie, Oppenheimer, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie smash box office records and re-spark interest in returning to theaters after a few years of stagnation, despite none of these films ranking at the top of the list in 2023.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie ranked 10th on the Most Anticipated Movies list of 2023, and Barbie got second in the Live Action Comedy category, while Oppenheimer was overlooked entirely, showing that what audiences say they want to watch doesn’t always align with what they flock to see.
“2023 was a monumental year for moviegoers and theaters alike, with blockbusters like Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and many more uniting audiences of all ages to experience brilliant stories on the big screen,” said Erik Davis, managing director of Fandango. “The new year is looking to bring even more people back into theaters through returning franchises such as Deadpool, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, and Despicable Me, beloved reimagined stories like Mean Girls and Wicked Part 1, and highly anticipated action blockbusters like Dune: Part Two and A Quiet Place: Day One.”
Of the 8,000 surveyed, 80% felt theaters provide an experience that can’t be recreated at home, a sentiment echoed by Pixar’s creative chief officer Pete Doctor who said the small screen doesn’t capture the full effect of his studio’s creations. Additionally, Fandango’s survey participants said 71% plan to see films in a premium format, such as IMAX or Dolby, while 68% plan to watch multiple movies in this enhanced setting.
Audiences are also excited to see Lady Gaga’s performance as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux and Jenna Ortega in Beetlejuice 2. The list breaks down the most anticipated films by genre, including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire as the number one action film, Despicable Me 4 for family-friendly films, and Beetlejuice 2 as the top movie in horror and comedy.
