Duolingo and Crunchyroll are teaming up to provide a full immersion language learning experience for anime fans. Now, Doulingo’s popular Japanese course offers thousands of phrases inspired by popular anime series.

Crunchyroll is an international streaming service providing members access to the world’s largest manga and anime collection. With the new partnership with Duolingo, members won’t need Crunchyroll’s 44,000+ episodes totaling 18,000 hours of binge-able anime translated for them anymore. There will even be featured series for language learners including everyday vocabulary in an easy-to-understand format, such as Bananya, Free! Iwatobi Swim Club, Laid-Back Camp, and Nichijou – My Ordinary Life.

“Anime is a dynamic medium and we know viewers have a curiosity for learning. Now on Duolingo, fans worldwide can celebrate anime through learning iconic phrases from their favorite series. We also hope anime-curious learners will be intrigued by their Japanese lessons on Duolingo and will explore all that anime has to offer on Crunchyroll,” says Terry Li, Senior Vice President of Emerging Business, Crunchyroll

Duolingo is the world’s most popular and most downloaded language-learning app featuring over 100 courses spanning 41 languages. The partnership went live as the platform’s Japanese language course reached its sixth anniversary. An ever-expanding fondness for anime has helped Japanese become the third most utilized course for English speakers on Duolingo.

“We chose to partner with the leader in anime entertainment, Crunchyroll, to advance our Japanese course because we know watching TV shows and films in the language you’re studying is a great way to learn and we wanted to offer our learners a way to further immerse themselves in the Japanese language through anime,” said George Audi, Duolingo’s Senior Director of Business Development.

Crunchyroll offers a free ad-supporting membership that is now accompanied by a one-month free trial of Super Duolingo, although Premium subscribers will qualify for a free-trial lasting two months. In return, Duolingo members already taking its Japanese course could be eligible for a free month of Crunchyroll Mega Fan.
