Cord Cutting’s Growth Has More Than Tripled in 2019

man cutting cord with scissorsCord cutting is having a record year in 2019 as it continues to grow. Now the Leichtman Research Group is reporting that 1.53 million American households canceled traditional pay-TV in the second quarter of 2019.

“This marked the fourth consecutive quarter of record pay-TV industry net losses,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for LRG. “With an increased focus on acquiring and retaining profitable subscribers, [satellite] services accounted for more than half of the net pay-TV losses in 2Q 2019, and 63% of the losses over the past year.”

This jump is more than triple the 420,000 households that canceled cable TV in the second quarter of 2018.

If this rate of growth continues over the next year cord cutting will grow by over 6.12 million American households.

Several analysts predicted that cord cutting would slow in 2019, but we are seeing record cord cutting growth rates this year.

Cord cutting will reportedly hit 40 million US households in 2019. Currently, the top cable TV providers have about 86.6 million subscribers to their traditional pay-TV streaming services. This is the lowest level of subscribers in more than a decade.
