This past week Cord Cutters News officially started our fifth year. Looking back it feels like the site just started, but at the same time, it feels like it was 10 years ago.
Cord Cutters News’s Past
I started Cord Cutters News as a way to give what I thought was an honest look at cord cutting. I was sick of seeing stories about how cord cutting was not real. I was a cord cutter and knew other people who had become cord cutters. So I set out to create a site that would give an honest look at cord cutting.
From an extra room in my house, I started writing. Quickly it became clear that there was a huge demand for cord cutting news. The second week the site was live more than 62,000 people visited the site in a single day. So many people visited the site it was shut down by my hosting provider for violations of terms of service.
From there it was a slow few years writing about a post a day. After two years a big moment came. The site was growing and making money but I was still working and the site was a hobby. A decision had to be made. Do I jump in with both feet to grow Cord Cutters News and work on it full time or do I try to stay with a safe job? I took the leap and never looked back.
Cord Cutters News Today
Late last year a similar turning point came. After years of working on Cord Cutters News from an extra bedroom in my house, the site had grown to the point that one person could no longer run it even with some help here and there. So the questions became do I cut back on the site or do I once again jump in with both feet.
I once again jumped in with both feet by renting some office space and hiring some help.
Rachael is our second full-time employee of Cord Cutters News, LLC. She does a ton of the back-end work from handling the newsletters to managing the social media. Rachael also does a long list of tasks that used to take up half my day like paperwork, updating older posts, and doing all the small things that it takes to keep a site this size running.
The Future of Cord Cutters News
So what is next for Cord Cutters News? The last few months have been all about getting Cord Cutters News to a point that we can take it to the next level. Now that there is more site support, we are able to invest time into growing the site.
So here are a few things to look for from Cord Cutters News in 2018.
Updated Website
One of our goals for 2018 is to give the site a slight update. We recently invested in new hosting to handle the higher traffic. Now we want to invest in the front end of the site. Look for a slightly updated look and some cool new features later on in 2018. (When I say later, I mean later on. These things don’t happen overnight.)
YouTube
We have slowly been putting more time into YouTube Channel with our weekly Q&A and recap shows. Look for us to do more of this in the weeks and months to come. We recently invested in some new video software that should help us offer higher quality videos all with the goal of making cord cutting easier to understand.
Helping Cord Cutters
One of the main things about cord cutting is there is no single place to go to for help. We hope to slowly change that with our new Cord Cutting Q&A system. Now cord cutters have a single place to go to post questions and get answers from fellow cord cutters.
If you have not checked out our cord cutting Q&A section, please make sure to check it out. Maybe post your question or help others who have questions. Soon we hope this will become a huge resource for new and old cord cutters to get the most from their cord cutting experience.
Cord Cutters News App
Less than a month ago Cord Cutters News launched an official app on iOS, Android, and Fire tablets. In just a few weeks about 5,000 people downloaded the app! Now we plan to slowly make the app better.
We use a third-party premade app format, and we are working closely with the app creators to add a few new features, such as landscape, that people have asked for. Maybe even some day there will be an ad-free option for those who would rather donate than see ads.
Want to help support Cord Cutters News?
I often get asked how someone can help support Cord Cutters News. The easiest way is to visit Cord Cutters News without using an ad blocker. This helps us pay our bills and support our families.
The next way to help Cord Cutters News is to tell your friends and family about the site. Share our stories on social media and help get the word out about cord cutting.
