Space enthusiasts and Xfinity customers are in for a treat as Comcast partners with MIT Media Lab to deliver a giant leap for mankind through an immersive lunar viewing experience.

With the help of three research payloads aboard the SpaceX IM-2 rocket, MIT Media Lab is set to unveil never-before-seen 3D photos of the moon and live footage of its historic mission. Thanks to this collaboration, Xfinity X1 users and online viewers can access these groundbreaking visuals via www.tothemoontostay.org and through an interactive X1 destination.

Bringing the Moon to Viewers at Home

MIT Media Lab’s latest lunar research mission is poised to change how people experience space exploration. Among the three payloads sent on the IM-2 mission is a 3D lunar imaging camera that will capture the most detailed scans of the moon’s surface ever recorded. The high-resolution imagery will provide centimeter-scale accuracy, helping researchers and space enthusiasts alike gain a better understanding of our closest celestial neighbor.

Comcast, a longtime industry partner of MIT Media Lab, was invited to be the mission’s communications partner. Through this role, Comcast is facilitating the delivery of real-time lunar images, live video streams, and educational content directly into homes across the globe. Xfinity X1 users can access the lunar content simply by saying “to the moon” into their voice remote, unlocking a constantly updated interactive destination featuring mission updates, crew interviews, and exclusive scientific insights.

A Unique Web and X1 Experience

For those without Xfinity, the same content will be available online through their newly launched website. This site, co-developed by MIT and Comcast, integrates elements from both the MIT Media Lab and X1 experience, ensuring broad accessibility for viewers eager to follow the mission.

Both the X1 destination and the website will feature:

  • Live streams of key mission events, including the highly anticipated IM-2 lunar landing on March 6 at 12:32 PM ET.
  • First-of-its-kind photos of an Earth eclipse, as seen from the lunar surface, if conditions permit.
  • Detailed 3D images of the moon, captured by MIT’s state-of-the-art depth camera, providing an unprecedented look at the lunar landscape.
  • Exclusive interviews with project scientists and crew members sharing insights on the mission’s objectives and findings.
  • Educational content, including interactive learning modules on space exploration, lunar science, and the history of moon missions.

Julianne Heinzmann, Senior Software Engineer at Comcast, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “Comcast has been a proud member of MIT Media Lab for almost 20 years, and we’re honored to help bring the moon mission to viewers across the globe through our X1 platform and this new website. The experience we’ve built allows audiences to engage with this momentous event like never before.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Lunar Exploration

The To the Moon to Stay initiative is part of a broader effort to engage the public in humanity’s return to the moon. With NASA’s Artemis III mission planned for 2027, MIT’s IM-2 research is helping lay the groundwork for future lunar exploration, particularly in the challenging terrain of the moon’s south pole.

“By working with Xfinity, we’re making it easy for everyone to experience the moon in ways they never have before,” said Ariel Ekblaw, MIT Lunar Mission Principal Investigator. “This mission is not just about advancing technology, it’s about inspiring the next generation of explorers who will one day walk on the moon.”

In the coming months, Comcast plans to expand its “To the Moon” experience across additional platforms, including Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and Xumo devices.

Be sure to tune in on March 6 to watch the IM-2 landing live and explore the cutting-edge visuals from MIT’s historic mission.
