Increasingly Americans are looking to other sources for news instead of turning to cable TV news networks.
According to a report from Variety, CNN and Fox News both saw viewership drop 20% in 2023. However, MSNBC saw a 2% jump in viewership; Newsmax saw a big jump of 22%, and NewsNation’s numbers leaped 73%.
Overall, Fox News was still the most watched news network with 1.899 million viewers on average in 2023. That makes it not only the most-watched TV news network but also the most watched cable TV network in 2023. Only ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC had more viewers in 2023.
MSNBC was the 8th most-watched TV network with 1.220 million viewers on average. CNN was the 22nd most-watched TV network with an average viewership of 591,000. Newsmax was the 51st most-watched TV network with an average viewership of 225,000. In fact, Newsmax is watched by more people than Animal Planet and Adult Swim who came in tied at 52nd most-watched TV network in 2023.
NewsNation saw the biggest jump in viewership and now averages 109,000 viewers. It is the 89th most watched TV network just behind Nick Jr. at 87.
There are more options than ever for news—text, video, and audio with online options. It seems that many Americans are looking for new options for news in 2023. A trend that seems likely to continue in 2024.
