While CNN’s parent company, WarnerMedia, is prepping for a mega-merger with Discovery Incorporated, the news network is reportedly exploring its own streaming service venture. The Wall Street Journal reports that it’s being referred to internally as CNN+, and it features new shows leveraging the network’s current hosts, like Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon.

Those shows would be distinct from the programming that’s currently available on CNN, and WSJ says the news network has come to agreements with several of its anchors for work that includes producing content on the new streaming service.

Jeff Zucker, CNN’s president, reportedly told staff members the network’s own streaming plans wouldn’t be affected by the larger WarnerMedia and Discovery deal, which recently unveiled a new name: Warner Bros. Discovery. Zucker also said CNN+, or whatever it ends up officially being called, is still on track to launch within the next year.

The move to launch a new service would follow other recent examples of cable news organizations looking to leverage streaming. NBC, for one, has been using its new Peacock streaming service as a platform for news content. And back in 2018, Fox News launched the Fox Nation streaming service.

Official details on the effort are pretty scarce at the moment. In any case, we’ll continue to monitor CNN’s streaming ambitions and report back if and/or when we hear more.
