Chromecast with Google TV 4K is finally getting an update that includes an updated security patch from October.
The STTE.230915.005.S1 update mainly delivers the security patch, some bug fixes and performance improvements, and minor changes to the boot animation, according to 9to5Google.
The update is 104MB and based in Android TV 12, which means users operating Android TV 13 or 14 can’t upgrade.
So far, 9to5Google said it could only confirm the update on Chromecast with Google TV 4K, but Chromecast with Google TV HD will likely get the update soon.
This isn’t the first time Google’s Android TVOS security patches have lagged. In October, Google TV users received an update that contained the security patch from July.
The patch should install on your gadget automatically, but you can check by going to Settings > System > About > System Update.
This comes as Google gets ready to refresh the look to Google TV with a more rounded look. Google has announced that app developers need prepare new app icons for an early 2024 Google TV redesign.
Google has announced that in early 2024, Google will update the look of the home screen. This will include all apps now having round icons instead of square. However, there are reports that Google will be making other changes to Google TV. This one is just getting announced now so developers can prepare for the update.
Here is what Google announced today:
With over 10,000 apps on Android TV OS, it can be difficult to pick favorites. That’s why we’re making it even easier for Google TV users to find apps by creating more space with distinctive round icons on the “Your apps” row.
Coming early 2024, apps in Google TV’s “For you” tab will be displayed in a circular format to make better use of the space. These icons are derived from the
andrdoid:icon
resource, and if you aren’t already, you will need to begin providing them to make sure your app looks great in this new UI. Read on to learn more about the specific requirements.
