CenturyLink Settles a Case for Deceptive Advertising

Woman going over billsCenturyLink has settled a lawsuit in Oregon, alleging that CenturyLink used deceptive advertising by not disclosing fees included in billing. As a result of the settlement, the company will pay $4 million.

Last month, CenturyLink settled a similar case in Washington state that ended with the company paying $6.1 million in refunds to customers who were also charged for hidden fees on internet and TV services.

CenturyLink has commented they do not believe they used deceptive practices, stating that it “expressly denies any liability or wrongdoing and is entering into [the agreement] as a settlement of disputed claims and to avoid further inconvenience and costs of potential litigation.”

“Purchasing internet, phone service and cable is confusing enough without false promises, and confusing prices and fees. Today’s settlement sends a clear message that hidden fees and other forms of unfair and deceptive business practices will not be tolerated in Oregon,” said Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum.

With these two cases setting a precedent, we’ll have to wait and see if other states will seek settlements to give customers refunds as well.
