CenturyLink’s new plan offers 300 GB for plans 7 Mbps and lower or 600 GB for plans over 7 Mbps. After you go over your limit, you pay $10 per each additional 50 GB—up to a monthly maximum of $50 per month.
“Data usage limits encourage reasonable use of your CenturyLink High Speed Internet service so that all customers can receive the optimal Internet experience they have purchased with their service plan,” the company’s new “excessive” usage policy claims. Except usage caps on fixed-line networks have nothing to do with network congestion and aren’t a good way to manage said congestion when it does exist.
CenturyLink went on to say that this new plan “gives our customers proactive management of their usage and ensures they are being billed fairly,” graciously claims CenturyLink in a media statement. “Very few customers will see any change in what they pay for Internet service, as customers will only be billed an additional amount if they exceed the Internet usage limit for the High-Speed Internet plan they purchased.”
“CenturyLink will analyze the data from this trial to determine next steps and make decisions regarding further rollout of usage-based billing,” says the company.
CenturyLink has long had data caps for their users but with very limited enforcement. Now it seems that they are very serious about using these data caps and will likely be enforcing the new overage fees.
