This week speaking during the company’s first-quarter earnings call Maxine Moreau, president of consumer markets for CenturyLink, said the new live TV streaming service will deliver a “skinnier bundle” of programming than its full-fledged IPTV bundle, known as Prism TV, as well as offer add-on packages for a higher monthly price. But she did not reveal any pricing, programming or packaging details of the new OTT service, noting that all these elements are still being evaluated in the market trials.
Little is known for now but from the call and sources close to the plan CenturyLink is looking at a cheap base service. After you buy the base service you can add additional channels through add-ons in the same way you do with Sling TV. It is even reported that CenturyLink is hopping this new service will allow them to shut down the Prism TV in favor of the cheaper streaming option.
CenturyLink seems to be hopping that they can take on their main competitor AT&T’s DIRECTV NOW with this new service. They will face a hard uphill fight as Hulu and Sony also already have a live TV streaming service on the market. Others including Verizon and Comcast are also working on their own live TV services.
