CBS & Sony Go to Court Over “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” Distribution Rights

A legal battle between CBS and Sony Pictures Television (SPT) over the distribution rights to the iconic game shows “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” has intensified, with CBS successfully blocking Sony’s attempt to take over distribution. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge granted CBS a temporary restraining order on Thursday, preventing Sony from terminating its distribution agreements with CBS, at least for the time being according to a report from Variety.

The dispute stems from longstanding contracts between the two companies that date back to the 1990s. Sony inherited the rights to the shows when it acquired Merv Griffin Enterprises in 1994, while CBS gained control of the distribution agreements through its acquisition of King World in 1999. The decades-long partnership has been lucrative for both companies, but tensions have flared in recent months.

Sony initiated the legal battle last October, accusing CBS of failing to maximize licensing revenue for the shows and improperly withholding certain license fees. CBS countersued, alleging that Sony’s claims were a pretext to try to break the distribution agreements after CBS refused a substantial buyout offer.

The conflict escalated this week when Sony filed an amended complaint and notified CBS’s licensees and business partners that it would be taking over distribution of the shows. CBS responded by seeking a temporary restraining order, arguing that Sony’s actions would cause irreparable harm, including significant financial losses and disruption of ongoing negotiations in numerous markets.

In its argument for the restraining order, CBS emphasized the potential disruption to its business relationships and revenue streams. The network highlighted the ongoing negotiations in 70 markets that would be jeopardized by Sony’s sudden takeover. CBS also stressed the long-standing nature of its distribution agreements and the potential damage to its reputation if it were unable to fulfill its obligations to its station clients.

Sony, in its defense, argued that it had taken the step “reluctantly” due to CBS’s “far-reaching, and ever-escalating, failure to meet its contractual obligations.” The company maintained that the transition to Sony-led distribution had been “seamless” and that it had already delivered episodes to over 200 affiliates. Sony also contended that CBS had not demonstrated a strong likelihood of prevailing in the underlying legal dispute.

After considering the arguments from both sides, Judge Kevin Brazile granted CBS the temporary restraining order, preventing Sony from taking over distribution until the court can further evaluate the case. This decision represents a temporary victory for CBS, allowing it to maintain control of the lucrative distribution rights for “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” while the legal battle continues.

Both companies issued statements following the ruling. Sony maintained its position that it had lawfully terminated the distribution agreements and emphasized that the court’s order was temporary and did not reflect the eventual outcome of the litigation. CBS expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating that it would continue to distribute the shows to its station clients as it has for over 40 years.
