CBS Evening News Celebrates 77 Years as America’s Longest-Running Network News Broadcast

Today marks the 77th anniversary of the first broadcast of the CBS Evening News, a cornerstone of American journalism that debuted on May 3, 1948, as the nation’s longest-running network news program. Since its inception, the show has chronicled the world’s most pivotal moments, earning its place as a trusted source of information for generations of viewers.

The CBS Evening News began as CBS Television News, a 15-minute black-and-white broadcast anchored by Douglas Edwards on a fledgling network reaching just three East Coast stations. Airing weeknights at 7:30 p.m. ET, it was the first regularly scheduled network television news program to feature an anchor, setting a precedent for the modern newscast format. Edwards, a radio veteran, brought a steady presence to the program, covering post-World War II recovery, the early Cold War, and the dawn of the television age.

In 1962, Walter Cronkite took the helm, elevating the program to new heights. Under Cronkite, often called “the most trusted man in America,” the broadcast expanded to 30 minutes on September 2, 1963, a first for network news. His coverage of the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, the moon landing, and Watergate defined broadcast journalism, blending gravitas with humanity. Cronkite’s tenure, ending in 1981, remains a gold standard for journalistic integrity.

Dan Rather succeeded Cronkite, anchoring from 1981 to 2005. Rather’s era included reporting on the Iran-Contra affair, the Gulf War, and the September 11 attacks, maintaining the program’s reputation for in-depth reporting. Subsequent anchors, including Katie Couric, Scott Pelley, and Norah O’Donnell, navigated evolving media landscapes, from cable news competition to digital streaming.

In January 2025, the CBS Evening News entered a new chapter with co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice multitudes Maurice DuBois, broadcasting from Studio 47 in New York. The revamped format, inspired by local news, emphasizes immersive reporting, with contributions from correspondents like Margaret Brennan and meteorologist Lonnie Quinn. O’Donnell, who anchored from 2019 to 2025, transitioned to a senior correspondent role, continuing her legacy of high-profile interviews.

Despite industry challenges, including declining broadcast viewership, the CBS Evening News remains resilient. Recent ratings gains, particularly in the 25-54 demographic, underscore its relevance. With Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards, the program’s commitment to “hard news with heart” endures, covering everything from natural disasters to global conflicts.

As the CBS Evening News marks 77 years, it stands as a testament to journalistic excellence, adapting to a digital age while honoring its storied past.
