Recently CBS announced that this fall they will be releasing a set of standalone Star Trek episodes called Short Treks. These 10- to 15-minute episodes will focus on key characters from Star Trek: Discovery and the Star Trek Universe as a whole and will be available exclusively on CBS All Access.

“Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes,” said Alex Kurtzman. “They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”

These new shows will start airing on CBS All Access starting October 4 with an episode called “Runaway” following Tilly (Mary Wiseman). More episodes will follow in November and December.

CBS has also announced a new Star Trek show featuring Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard showing his life after his command of the Enterprise.

This seems to be part of a bigger push from CBS to create more exclusive content for CBS All Access. CBS is hoping that they can turn CBS All Access from something people subscribe to a few months a year into a year-round subscription by offering more content.
