As schools and businesses continue to close due to coronavirus concerns, movie studios are changing their strategies when it comes to releasing films on demand. Last week, Disney moved up the on-demand release date of Frozen 2 on Disney+, followed by the early release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker for digital purchase.
Now, two more films are getting an early on-demand release date – Birds of Prey and The Gentlemen. Both are available for pre-order now and will be available to start streaming on March 24.
Fandango shared the news via Twitter last night.

After the news of Universal’s strategy to release films for streaming at the same time as theatrical releases yesterday afternoon, Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan took to Twitter to say she could be on board for bringing her film to streaming platforms sooner as well.
I would not be opposed to putting Birds of Prey on VOD earlier. https://t.co/TrKynikHLx

While Birds of Prey did already have some time in theaters, the film received lower than expected turnouts. Soon after premiering, regulations were put in place to limit large gatherings. Now that many theaters are being shut down to minimize crowds, making the film available to a wide audience of streaming viewers seems like the right move.
