Big Changes Are Coming to Tablo DVRs As They Shut Down Their Legacy App

Cord cutters who rely on older Tablo DVR models have just months left before the apps they use disappear from app stores and lose all official support.

Nuvyyo, the Canadian electronics manufacturer behind the popular Tablo over-the-air digital video recorder brand — now owned by the E.W. Scripps Company — has confirmed that it will end support for all legacy Tablo applications on September 1, 2026. After that date, legacy Tablo apps will no longer be available to download from app stores. For the millions of cord cutters who purchased older Tablo models over the years and built their home TV setups around the platform, the clock is ticking.

The shutdown affects a wide range of popular older Tablo hardware. The following legacy network-connected Tablo devices are eligible for the legacy transition: the Tablo DUAL LITE, Tablo DUAL 64GB, Tablo DUAL 128GB, Tablo QUAD, Tablo QUAD 1TB, and the original 2-Tuner and 4-Tuner Tablo models. Owners of these devices who have not yet taken action are being urged to complete a transition process to migrate to Tablo’s newer 4th Generation app ecosystem.

Why Is Tablo Ending Legacy App Support?

The company has been transparent about its reasoning. Many of the underlying technologies used by legacy Tablo apps and services are becoming obsolete and are no longer maintainable, which is why support for all legacy Tablo apps is being discontinued on September 1st, 2026. Rather than continuing to patch and prop up aging software infrastructure, Nuvyyo has opted to fully sunset the old platform and funnel users toward its newer apps, which are described as being built on modern technology that will continue to receive ongoing updates.

The newer 4th Generation apps are built on modern technology, are easier to maintain, and will receive ongoing updates. The visual distinction between the two is easy to spot: apps for 4th Generation Tablo models feature a dark blue background with white and light blue accents, while the legacy apps use a white background with light blue and orange accents.

What Happens If You Don’t Transition?

For users who drag their feet past the September 1 deadline, the consequences are significant. Legacy Tablo apps will remain accessible to users but won’t be maintained or updated, and won’t be available to download from app stores after September 1, 2026. That means anyone who uninstalls or loses the app — such as after buying a new streaming device — won’t be able to get it back.

The transition process itself requires a firmware update to version 2.2.60. If your Tablo is eligible to participate in the legacy transition, you do not need to purchase a 4th Generation Tablo device, nor is there any cost associated with the transition. Once you update your legacy Tablo firmware to version 2.2.60, you will be able to access your legacy Tablo device via 4th Generation Tablo apps. That is welcome news for budget-conscious cord cutters who don’t want to spend money on new hardware just to keep their existing Tablo running.

However, some older devices cannot make the leap. Legacy Tablo models running very old firmware versions (2.1.0 through 2.2.8) cannot be updated to the required firmware version 2.2.58. Owners of those devices were previously offered a trade-in coupon toward a 4th Generation Tablo, but that program expired on March 15th, 2026 — meaning those users are now largely out of options through official channels.

Notable Features That Won’t Make the Jump

While the transition is being presented as an upgrade, Nuvyyo has acknowledged that some beloved features from the legacy platform will not carry over. The 4th Generation Tablo app does not support Tablo Connect, which enables out-of-home streaming. Owners of network-connected legacy Tablo models who rely on this feature should keep this in mind. The company noted that its engineering team is exploring options to bring out-of-home streaming to newer devices but offered no timeline for when that might happen.

Additionally, the 4th Generation Tablo app does not support Premium Service subscriptions or Automatic Commercial Skip — features that many longtime subscribers have paid for and used regularly.

On the positive side, those who complete the transition may find some financial relief. After transitioning to 4th Generation Tablo apps, legacy network-connected Tablo device owners may wish to cancel their TV Guide Data Service and/or Premium Service subscriptions, since the newer apps provide subscription-free TV guide data.

What Should Legacy Tablo Owners Do Now?

The guidance from Nuvyyo is clear: don’t wait. Owners of eligible devices should update their firmware to version 2.2.60 and complete the legacy transition as soon as possible to ensure continued access to their Tablo DVR through the new app infrastructure. Those who choose to remain on the legacy apps should understand that after September 1, those apps are essentially frozen in time — no updates, no new downloads, and no guarantee of long-term functionality.

For a platform that has long been a favorite among antenna TV enthusiasts and cord cutters looking for an affordable DVR solution, the end of an era is fast approaching.
