The DeLorean DMC-12 is revving up its flux capacitor once again as the beloved Back to the Future trilogy marks its 40th anniversary with a grand celebration. The iconic time-travel saga, starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric Doc Brown, is returning to theaters on October 31 2025 and launching a limited-edition trilogy box set, delighting fans old and new.

Originally released in the summer of 1985, Back to the Future captivated audiences with its thrilling blend of science fiction, comedy, and heart. The story of Marty McFly, a teenager who accidentally travels back to 1955 and risks erasing his own existence by interfering with his parents’ romance, introduced the world to the unforgettable Grandfather Paradox. The film’s success spawned two sequels, cementing the trilogy’s place as one of the most cherished franchises in cinematic history. With its iconic DeLorean time machine, memorable quotes like “Great Scott!”, and a timeless message about shaping one’s destiny, the series remains a cultural touchstone.

To celebrate this milestone, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing the Back to the Future Trilogy 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Gift Set on October 14, just in time for Back to the Future Day on October 21. The collectible set includes all three films in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray, and Digital formats, housed in a stunning Flux Capacitor SteelBook. Fans will also find exclusive goodies, including a replica Gibson Mini Guitar, an OUTATIME metal license plate, and a visual history book detailing the trilogy’s legacy. The set boasts nine hours of bonus content, with over 90 minutes of never-before-seen features, offering a deep dive into the making of the films.

New bonus features include 40 Years Later: Reflecting on the Future, where co-writer/producer Bob Gale discusses the trilogy’s lasting impact, and Back to Hill Valley, a nostalgic tour of iconic filming locations with Gale and Donald Fullilove (Mayor Goldie Wilson). Untold Stories of Back to the Future shares personal anecdotes from the crew, while A Mystery in History explores the history of the Gibson guitar Marty plays at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, rallying fans to locate the missing prop. A TCM Classic Film Festival panel featuring Gale, cinematographer Dean Cundey, and stunt double Charlie Croughwell rounds out the new additions.

Legacy features include the six-part documentary Tales from THE FUTURE, deleted scenes with commentary, lost audition tapes, and insights into the DeLorean’s restoration. Fans can also enjoy behind-the-scenes featurettes, a Q&A with Michael J. Fox, and music videos like Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love.”

The trilogy’s theatrical re-release, complete with a new trailer, invites audiences to experience Marty and Doc’s adventures on the big screen. As Bob Gale reflects, “Forty years later, the story still resonates because it’s about choices, family, and the power to shape your future.” Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, this anniversary celebration is the perfect way to travel back in time.
