AT&T’s Headlong Rush Into Streaming Is Bad For Cord Cutting

Latin woman looking disappointed at her laptopscreen, sitting behind her desk at the office.AT&T has recently been rushing forward since their deal to buy Time Warner closed. From buying an ad company to announcing a new streaming service, AT&T Watch TV, it seems that all things are full speed ahead at the company. Yet maybe AT&T needs to slow down and look around.

Just as AT&T starts to rush forward, DIRECTV NOW has been suffering widespread issues from lagging to buffering. While improvements have been made, DIRECTV NOW 2.0 is still far from the smooth experience many expected.

Now AT&T is rushing into launching two more streaming services. AT&T Watch TV will launch this week as an inexpensive $15 streaming service. AT&T also announced plans to launch a streaming service of DIRECTV. This is not a true cord cutting service because it sounds like all AT&T wants to do is replace the satellite dish with a streaming service. Your contract, channels, and terms will be the same, but the delivery method will be streaming. This new DIRECTV streaming service is said to be launching by the end of 2018.

Although this may sound like a good idea, the rush to just get something out is hurting cord cutting and AT&T. Increasingly new consumers are finding the experience to be below their levels of expectations. Instead of reflecting exclusively on AT&T, this negative experience is making cord cutting look bad.

With both AT&T Watch TV and DIRECTV’s new streaming service both being built off DIRECTV NOW, it is possible issues are about to become even more widespread. This could once again put new stress on DIRECTV NOW, creating a very negative impression of cord cutting.

A service that overaggressively moves forward into streaming before they are ready can negatively affect all of cord cutting. Hopefully, AT&T will slow down and build up their infrastructure before they rush out two more streaming services this year.
